He inherited the Maindiff estate on the death of his father Crawshay Bailey, in 1872, building  Maindiff Court in 1877, along with other building work on the estate. The former house then became The Farrm.

Out of his own money in 1879 he rebuilt the church at Llandewi Skirrid,with memorials to his mother. Sarah Barker, who had died in1844,  housekeeper to his father .

At the time of the 1881 census, the 3^rd April, he had 8 servants, of which one was M. Probert, born in 1864 at Crickhowell, and a governess from Germany at Maindiff Court, along with his wife and two daughters
